Artist’s Statement
What
appeals to me about painting is the combining of disparate
elements into a unified whole much like the approach of a
choreographer or a composer. As a lifelong musician, I am very
interested in the rhythmic patterns that the formal elements of
painting create.
Working with the subject matter of landscapes and
musical instruments allows me to deal with the universal and the
highly personal. The landscape paintings represent the place of
my youth- Aiken County, SC, and working with musical instruments
such as banjos allows me to combine a personal rhythm with a
Southern icon. In such work I reinterpret the commonplace and
quilt together fragments from a uniquely American mythology,
choreographing and orchestrating pop-cultural, Southern
vernacular works of rhythmic painting.
