Several years ago, I began to reinvestigate some of the iconic
figures of art history, and since then, some portion of every
day in my studio has been spent rediscovering the rich and
brilliant arc of the History of Art. As I was taking this
sentimental journey, in addition to my text work, I began to
make derivative images from the classical motifs. Some studies
became deconstructed; others were experimentally altered.
For example, I dissected the range
of colors used by particular artists, and produced color field
studies focusing upon the painter’s range of hues, shades, and
tones. I studied the geographic environments which may have
influenced certain artists, and therefore, cartography, along
with weather report and natural lighting - all of these became a
part of my sketchbook work.
I also began to use a grid
arrangement with rows and columns. I experimented as well with
digital arrangements and collages, all of which helped me to
contemporize the past. The two free-hanging grid installations,
“Souvenir” and “Memento”, are part of an ongoing inquiry. They
are representative of an effort to see something new and fresh
in an image which our collective minds have long ago memorized.
The installations are also an effort
to reaffirm the Gestalt of Art History where by the total of our
experiences and encounters with art represent a far greater sum
than the total of any particular experience.
The “Anniversary Grid” evolved after
Rembrandt’s four hundredth birthday when I became interested in
the depth and breadth of his lifetime of creating images of self
portraits. I was fascinated by the wide range of the pigments;
in spite of his predominate use of black and browns. It is
precisely his economical use of applying the gem tones which
makes the work so luminous and startling. In this installation,
I tried to mix exactly, Rembrandt’s more fugitive colors and
expand them as a color field exercise.
It is especially gratifying that the
location of the Performing Arts Center, and the Highlands
Cashiers Chamber Music Festival, should be the venue for this
series. The classical works performed by the Festival are time
- tested masterworks, and yet they are performed today with a
contemporary freshness, so that we might “see” the music in a
new way. In much the same way, we continue to view the
masterpieces of art with a “fresh eye”, remaining open minded
for some new interpretation.
And so, in classical music, the
coloration and tonality give fresh breath- a possibility of
changing nuance, to the works we love to hear; and so too, in
classical art work, the tempo and rhythm change as our
understanding changes. In the end, we will all have our
favorite souvenirs; the mementos which inform the dialogue of
our lives; here, for your viewing, are some of mine.
